The African Championships for RS:X and Techno 2983 Plus, hosted by the Egyptian Sailing and Water Ski Federation at the beautiful Moonbeach Resort on the Red Sea, Egypt, has begun and runs until 2nd December.
A sunny windy day welcomed the competitors with winds from 12 to 18 knots from the northwest. [more]
First on the water were the Techno293 Plus Women for 3 races. Algerian Ait Ali Slimane Lina took the first two bullets of the competition and Abid Ikram, also from Algeria, followed her across the line for these two races then won race three. These top two have equal points. Third placed Salma Weal El Ashmawy from Egypt followed Abid over the line in every race.
For the RS:X Men, it is Jean-Marc Gardette of the Seychelles ahead of Bouras Hamza of Algeria by one point, no doubt this will be a close one, unless Mohand Amr of Egypt has a say in this. 4th placed Egyptian Mohamed Elsafty twice beat Mohand over the line so is also in strong contention for a podium position.
As for the Techno 293 Plus Men it’s a very mixed bag. Algerian Brighet Imadedine sits at the top of the leaderboard without taking a single bullet but performing consistently. In second place, Youssef El Laban from Egypt took one bullet whilst Bennaga Islam from Algeria took two wins and is in third place. Others in the fleet are in the running for podium positions, particularly when discards take effect.
Wind is expected for the whole week, off the shore of South Sanai. Follow the event on the official website
