Record number of participants at ProAm Windsurf Cup Lake Garda
Langer wins in foiling, Lang in fin slalom
The 2025 season of the California Windsurf Cup kicked off last weekend with the ProAm Windsurf Cup Lake Garda. With 59 starters from six nations, including some PWA World Cup pros, a strong field gathered in Italy for the opening event. On Saturday, eight races were held in the foiling and fin slalom disciplines in wind speeds of up to over 25 knots. Unfortunately, the weak wind on Sunday meant that no further races were possible. In foiling, Vincent Langer (GER-1, Duotone) came out on top ahead of Bob Van de Burgt (NED-737, Point-7) and Daniel Riegler (AUT-7, Neilpryde, JP). Marco Lang (AUT-66, Duotone) won the Fin Slalom ahead of Andrea Cucchi (ITA-1, Point-7) and Manuel Zugsbratl (AUT-230).
Since last year, the California Windsurf Cup has started the season together with Windsurfing Austria and the renowned Circolo Surf Torbole at Lake Garda. Numerous athletes use the venue for spring training and the ProAm Windsurf Cup Lake Garda is the first opportunity to determine their position or test their equipment under real racing conditions. Various German and Austrian iQFOiL Youth squad surfers have also travelled to Lake Garda for training and the regatta. This attracts more and more participants to the ProAm Windsurf Cup Lake Garda every year. Fin slalom and foiling were started alternately in two independent fleets with separate rankings on a large downwind slalom course. Despite the new record number of participants and the full fleet race with 42 registered foilers, everything went completely smoothly.
In the foiling discipline, Vincent Langer showed a convincing performance with three race wins and three second places. After a total of eight races, he won the discipline with 8.10 points. Dutch World Cup pro Bob van de Burgt followed in second place. He won two races and also secured three second and one third place. This gives him 10.40 points in the results list. Like Langer, Austrian Daniel Riegler won three races. He also scored points with second and third place. However, he also had a few slip-ups, so that he came third in the results list with 14.10 points. The Croatian Mistral Matulj (CRO-211, Patrik Windsurfing) and the Swiss Justas Kaktus (SUI-60, Patrik Windsurfing) complete the top five in the foiling discipline. Five different nations in the top five reflect the international focus of the ProAm Windsurf Cup Lake Garda.
PWA World Cup pro Marco Lang came out on top in the Fin Slalom discipline. The Austrian won six of the eight races and took two second places. In the end, he topped the results list with an ideal score of 4.2. Second place went to Point 7 boss and Lake Garda local Andrea Cucchi. He won two races and came second five times, giving him 9.4 points in the final tally. Another Austrian, Manuel Zugsbratl, followed in third place with 19.0 points, denying his compatriot Clemens Leitner a place on the podium by just one point. Germany’s Jonas Hölzl completed the top 5.
The concept of the ProAm Windsurf Cup and the cooperation between the German Windsurfing Association, Windsurfing Austria and Circolo Surf Torbole once again proved its worth. The regatta was a perfect start to the season and the international co-operation brought together many windsurfers from different countries. A continuation is therefore firmly planned for next year. However, windsurfers don’t have to wait quite that long for the next international ProAm Windsurf Cup. From 1 to 4 May, the Austrian Fin Slalom Championship will take place as part of the Lake Opening on Lake Neusiedl. All fin slalom fans will have the chance to take part in exciting races and collect ranking points for the California Windsurf Cup.
