Put the champagne on ice, it’ll be needed tomorrow! After three days of difficulty in winds that were at best “marginal”, under some grim grey skies, we finally got to understand why Cadiz is such a popular sailing spot, home of the Club Nautico Puerto Sherry and FAV, our hosts for this 2019 Techno 293 World Championships.
The penultimate day of racing was blessed with sunny skies and racing wind, and all four fleets were able to complete three more rounds of racing in more competitive conditions. [more]And with stronger conditions forecast for tomorrow’s final day it will be a proper test of the eventual winners’ all-round skills when they step up on the podium. And when we say stronger, let’s just say the sponsor flags have already been taken down to avoid them blowing away!
As for today’s action, a breeze has blown through the leader boards that may turn gale force tomorrow. The Junior Girls is still an Israel 1-2, with Tamar Steinberg and Danielle Ziv swapping places from the previous day. But watch out for the Polish fast mover Anna Igielska who has charged into third place. In Junior Boys, Israel’s Daniel Halperin is hanging on, but his rigging has been rattled by the pursuers, France’s Victor Gaubert and Italy’s Francesco Forani.
The Youth fleets had their first full day of the week, and the Youth Girls leader board has been totally shaken up. Overnight leader Hong Kong’s Cheuk Wing Mak slipped back to fourth place allowing France’s Jade Bruche to jump to top spot, with Spain’s Naiara Fernandez second and Israel’s Mika Kafri well placed in third. The Youth Boys were happy to be back on their boards, but it hasn’t made anything any clearer. It’s an incredibly tight five-way fight at the top, but it was a good wind day for Israel’s Tal Basik Tashtash and Adir Twill, lying first and second going into the final rounds, with long time leader, Italy’s Davide Antognoli, now occupying the third podium step.
If the forecast is correct, tomorrow will test the 369 entrants’ skills to the full. They have already more than lived up to expectation with their patience, good humour, skills and Techno spirit. Good luck to all 369 tomorrow.
