Day 1 of the 2026 IFCA Slalom Grand Slam World Championships got underway in Leucate, France, with 162 athletes from 20 nations competing for 10 world titles.

Following the 09:00 skippers’ meeting, where key information was shared with competitors, racing commenced in light and shifting wind conditions. The Foil fleets were first to take to the water, racing across two areas: Course A for Seniors and Course B for Junior and Youth divisions.

Despite challenging conditions, with winds ranging between 9 and 14 knots, the championship saw a promising start. The Foil Men’s fleet completed three heats, with athletes racing in groups of ten, where the top five advanced through each round toward the finals.

However, as the wind gradually eased around midday, the Race Committee made the decision to send competitors back to the beach on standby. With conditions failing to improve, racing was ultimately called off for the day.

Later in the afternoon, the official opening ceremony of the Mondial du Vent took place in the event village. Representatives from the local town hall, government officials, main sponsors, the Global Wing Foil Tour, and the IFCA Class President welcomed athletes and attendees, marking the formal start of the event.

Looking ahead, the forecast for the coming days remains encouraging, with the potential for stronger and more consistent winds. As is often the case in Leucate, conditions can change quickly, keeping anticipation high for the races to come.
