Ngwe Saung Beach, Ayeyarwaddy Division, Myanmar, was the venue for the 2013 South East Asian Games Regatta. The regatta was organised by the Myanmar Yachting Federation with the co-operation of Myanmar Olympic Committee and the ISAF.[more]
The event took place from 11th to 20th December with six nations participating in the windsurfing events – Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
Racing took place in three divisions – under 16 boys, under 16 girls, and Open – with 3 races per day, in a 12 race series.
A wonderful location, with launching from a glorious sandy beach, and competition in predominantly light winds which ultimately suited a very experienced Thai team.
Thailand won Gold in the Open and girls division, but had to settle for silver in the boys, which produced a win for the host nation Myanmar.
Jubilant celebrations greeted Set Naing Aung on his return to the shore, knowing a gold medal was on its way after defeating his Thai rival by the slimmest of margins, one point.
The margin of victory for Thai racers in the other divisions was greater, with both racers posting a majority of race wins, backed by consistent results in their other races.
The Gold Medalists were:
Open – Natthapheng Phonoppharat (Thailand)
U16 Boy – Set Naing Aung ( Myanmar)
u16 Girl – Duangkamon Phongern (Thailand)
