The first series of the Northeast Monsoon Grand Prix 2013 came to a rousing finish on Saturday, 16th February at Changi Beach Park. Much to the delight of the organisers, the regatta welcomed a whooping 50 participants – 39 windsurfers[more] and 11 Laser Radial sailors – more than double the number as compared to the Southwest Monsoon Grand Prix 2012! The first race of the regatta commenced at around 1pm and the participants got off to a very light start, coupled with passing showers. But the unfriendly weather conditions did not deter the fleet from racing well and having a whale of a time.

Thankfully, the winds soon picked up and participants were treated with consistently strong breeze of approximately 8 – 12 knots throughout the rest of the day; allowing both the windsurfers and laser radial sailors to complete over 30 races within a mere five hours. This year, the regatta saw the inclusion of the Champion of Champions category, which definitely served to take things up a notch. The races were particularly exciting; leaving spectators and supporters in beads of perspiration as they watched the close action happening right before them. The Champion of Champions segment is when the combined Top 4 of each individual category, such as the best four of the Laser Radial Youth & Senior, and the best four of the RS:One 7.8 Youth & Senior, face off in a final round to determine the Champion of Champions.

Indeed, the first series of the Northeast Monsoon Grand Prix 2013 has successfully lived up to, or rather, exceeded the high expectations of the participants, some of whom have taken part in last year’s Southwest Monsoon Grand Prix 2012 – all in all, the consensus was that it was a very successful regatta.

For those of you who have missed out on all the fun and action that took place last week, fret not, as there is still the upcoming Series 2 of the Northeast Monsoon Grand Prix 2013, which will be happening on the 3 March 2013 (Sunday) at Bay East Garden (Gardens by the Bay next to Costa Rhu and Marina Bay Golf Course).
