Already 20 countries are represented on the pre-entry list for the IFCA Junior, Youth and Masters Slalom Worlds, taking place at the world renowned Circolo Surf Torbole on the shores of beautiful Lake Garda, Italy from 9th to 14th July.[more] Joining a strong European contingent we have competitors coming from as far afield as the Caribbean Islands, USA and Peru.
Last year’s Junior Champion, Jean Patrick van der Wolde, is coming all the way from Curacao to “race against the big boys” in the youth fleet this year. He performed really well in the recent Curacao Challenge 2012. After three days of downwind slalom at Sint Joris Bay, he was in first place, but made the wrong choice of equipment for the last two days on the ocean so missed out on a podium place. Still he says, “it was great training for the IFCA World Championships in Italy.”
1st Youth at the recent IFCA Europeans, 19 year old Jordy Vonk from the Netherlands, has had to concentrate on his school work, preparing for his exams, since his return from Spain. Exams now over, he’s excited and his focus is completely on the World Cup.
Diego Domenianni from the USA began windsurfing in Buenos Aires, Argentina in the River de la Plata, when he was 11 years old. He took a long break from windsurfing when, aged 24, he moved to New York to help in the family business. As a “typical New Yorker trying to stay away from the cold weather”, it was the Miami windsurfing scene that eventually got him back into competition. He had to share the 2011 masters’ slalom title with 5 others as the wind in Curacao failed to produce the conditions for a final round result. No doubt he’s coming to Italy to claim sole ownership of the masters title in 2012!
There is still time to enter – on-line via the IWA website, or entries will be taken at the event site.
